TALL SHIPS OWEN SOUND

Friday August 16th
We are not camping in Owen Sound, but this was such a great day I couldn`t miss telling you about it.
We met Heather and Martin in Owen Sound for Lunch then went to the Harbour area to see the Tall Ships.

This shows a difference in sizes.

It was a really interesting day and a lot of fun.  The weather was perfect.  Lunch, as always, great.  We also enjoyed a visit to the Marine and Railroad Museum, which is well worth a visit should any of you be in the area.

OK, so now we are heading home again.  Such a great day, not happy for it to end, so let us try to keep it going.

Campfire evening in the back yard.  Seems like a good way to end a perfect day.

Now Looking forward to next weekend, when Don and Helen, John and Janet will be visiting us for lunch.

POINT FARMS PROVINCIAL PARK

Wednesday July 24th                               313637                                     10 a.m.

Time for some R & R.

Took off in bright sunshine heading for Point Farms, Goderich.   Always an easy ride as most of it is through the country.  Passed many farms.  Naturally all farmers are extremely busy at this time of the year.

Made a stop along the way in Lucknow for a lottery ticket.  Why Lucknow?  Who knows? May be a good omen!

All set by noon.  Site 122, a really good site.
313742.  Not too far from home,  105km.

Relaxed for a while, had lunch then decided it was time to wander down, literally "down" that is, to the beach.   We took the Tommy Wright trail down.  No stairs on that trail.
But that did promise 131 stairs to climb back up.

It was very breezy along the beach and the waves were quite ferocious. The Marine forecast had indicated waves of 1 - 2 metres, and from what we were seeing that was no exaggeration.

As always a really nice walk along the beach area, but very windy so headed along The Old Farms Trail, where it was a little more sheltered.

Back at site for late afternoon, where we settled down for a dominoes tournament, best out of three.  Yes, you are all correct, I did it again - the Champion!  Loser cooks supper.  Guess I can relax around the campfire for a while now.

The wind died down, the BBQ was great (Mike's Chef's hat worked well) and the fire was fantastic.  So all in all it was, once again, another good day.

THURSDAY 25th JULY
My goodness only 5 months to Christmas Day, when, weather permitting, we will be enjoying our picnic lunch on the beach in Port Elgin.

However, today the sun is shinning and it is getting warmer by the minute.  Still a light breeze, but nothing like yesterday.   After breakfast we decided we would walk The Old Farms Trail around the perimeter of the park.

We came to a fork in the trail, Hare's Trail or Tortoise's Trail?

Being such a beautiful morning and far too nice to hurry it away, we took the Tortoise's Trail and just meandered slowly along until we met the Old Farm Trail again.  The trail was very well groomed and made for a nice easy walk.  Probably a good thing as it was getting quite warm and we had a good couple of hours more walking to do to get back to camp.  Well worth it though.

Back at camp we relaxed for a while, had a late lunch, did some reading and then planned our next walk.

This time we went back to the beach area.  So very different to yesterday.  Hardly a breeze and no huge waves.

Of course wandering the beach meant another 131 steps to climb back up to be able to return to our camp.  Stopped half way to take this picture.

Pleased to say it seemed a lot easier than it was yesterday.

Back at camp for Happy Hour.  It had been a really nice afternoon.

We were just relaxing around the campfire when Adam (from Moonshiner's Daughter) stopped for a chat.  Adam and Cara arrived that afternoon.  Adam was out with Cameron and Lindsay on their bikes.  They invited us to their site for a visit later.  Which we did, and had a lot of fun.

Back at our site we sat around our fire for sometime, just enjoying the peace, quiet and the stars.  There we go again, another great day!

FRIDAY 26th July.
Lovely sunny morning.  After breakfast we took our time packing up ready to head home - not that we want to.

Decided to walk the Ravine Trail after we had packed up.  It was perfect weather for hiking this trail, which is probably our favorite trail in this park.  You are literally walking in the tree tops in some areas, and it a very long way down to the bottom of the ravine.  Extremely pretty.

A view from the tree tops looking towards the Lake.

From the trail we went down 138 steps to the beach below (which is what you see in the picture).

From there we just wandered the beach from the northern tip of the park to the southern end of the park.

About half way along the beach we met up with Adam and Cara, their friends and kids who had found a perfect spot to relax and let the kids play in the lake and build sand castles.  Had a visit with all of them then back to walking.

The steps at the southern end of the park always seem the most difficult to climb, due to the fact there are not hand rails on all the steps.  Oh well, once again we survived them all.

So onto our site ready to leave for the next lucky people.  We had been walking close to 3 hours.  It had been a fun morning.

When we left the park we decided it would be good to stop in at The King`s Pearl in Tiverton again for a late lunch, which I think we deserved after our hike through the tree tops - don`t you?

Then we really did have to head home.  Nice ride through the country again.  Home about 4.30 pm.  Still nice warm and sunny.

Looks like August could be a busy month for us, so where will our travels take us?  You will be the first to know!

V icker's Park. Durham

Sunday 14th July.
OK - So we are not actually camping at this time, but thought this was worth a mention any way.
Through the summer there are concerts in the park on Sunday evenings in Durham.  We have been to most of them, but this particular one has a special  reason for going.  The Moonshiner's Daughters were playing.  They are an excellent Blue Grass Band.   Adam and Cara used to play at our Little Pub every month.  So it was great to get together with them again.

Here is Cara tuning up ready to get playing.

Adam playing Banjo.

The whole group.
From left to right
Adam, Trish, Mark Cara.

It was a fabulous evening.

The park is beautiful at this time of year.
Wish you all could have been there.

Inverhuron Provincial Park.

Wednesday June 19th 2013.                                                          313242
Weather is really gearing up for the first day of summer, which is Friday.  Day by day the forecast suggests it is getting warmer by the hour. Nice!  So here we are off camping  for a few days.

It was a very easy drive to the Park.  Took site #62 and all set up by 12.30 p.m.

After lunch we relaxed for a while before taking a walk.

About 3.00 p.m. we headed along the rocky shoreline towards the Northern edge of the Park.  The breeze off Lake Huron kept us comfortably cool.

There were quite a few very interesting plants growing in the rocks.

We could hear a good number of song birds, but unfortunately they did not want to show themselves, so not at all sure what they were.  However, they sounded wonderful.

We headed back along the Scenic Drive Trail, which is very well named.  The trail runs along he shore line on the wooded side.
Very pretty!

Back at our camp we relaxed and caught up on some reading.  The weather was almost perfect, very relaxing.

We sat around the fire a bit later and  cooked our supper there, while we listened to The Toronto Blue Jays win another game.  Finally they managed to get on a winning streak.

It was so good to sit out in the open to see the millions of stars and almost full moon.
Great Life - been a super day - so Good Night.

Thursday June 20th 2013

Brilliant sunshine streaming in the windows this morning.  Makes you feel real good.

Breakfast outside was  delicious.  By 10 am it was already quite warm.  Now looking forward to walking the trails along the beach area to the South perimeter of the park.

As you can see Lake Huron has very clean clear water.

The "Pitcher's Thistle was in bloom in the dunes, classed as a "sensitive area", where the endangered species grow.  A board walk was made  through the dunes to protect the area.

Further along, past the actual sandy beach, back onto the stony shore line there were many spring flowers in bloom, including the Wild Iris.

The walk along the beach and the shore line was wonderful and getting quite warm even with the breeze off he lake, so we headed to the Scenic Trail again, where it was a lot more sheltered and cooler.  Then onto our campsite for lunch.

After lunch we stayed around our site reading and writing for a time, before a nice afternoon stroll all round the entire campsite.

It was a really nice afternoon just being lazy.  Made a change for us.

That was followed by a relaxing evening under the stars and that almost full moon again.  So good to sit out around the fire.
Night, night.

Friday June 21st 2013.
Once again a wonderful day, deep blue sky, no clouds and just a sight breeze.

This morning Mike had to put on his "mechanic's" hat on and change the right rear tire.  It looked a bit soggy yesterday afternoon, and very flat this morning.   Only flat on the bottom though!  Not too much of a problem.

Then it was getting close to our time to check out, so got all packed up again.

On the way home we stopped in Tiverton at the King's Pearl for a late lunch.

Very nice place, unfortunately the patio was full so we went inside.  That was really nice and probably a good move as it was nice and cool in there.  We really enjoyed that and look forward to going back there again.

OK - now we do have to return to the homestead.

Been a relaxing few days, feels like e have been gone for weeks.

ARROWHEAD PROVINCIAL PARK - HUNTSVILLE ONTARIO

May 26th 2013 Sunday.                                                                          312613

Well that good weather at the beginning of May did not last.  It snowed all day Mother's Day, May 12th.  Still had fun, regardless.  The following two weeks gave us some cold, some warm, some rain, and thunderstorms.  But today, Sunday 26th May, a little cool with north wind, but brilliant sunshine.  Not a cloud in the sky.

Ready to leave about 9 am, heading to Arrowhead, Huntsville.  We had forgotten how picturesque the drive North can be.

The Muskoka's were still unbelievably pretty.  Made us wonder why we hadn't been this way in such a long time.

It was a very easy drive, just kept to the two lane roads until we got to Highway 11 at Gravenhurst.  Very little traffic anywhere.

Checked in at Arrowhead Park and found our site #309, but couldn't set up right then as previous people still there.  In fact there were a lot of campers still there.

As we couldn't get on our site we drove to the beach area of Arrowhead Lake and had a picnic lunch.  Very pretty relaxing place.  I think we will enjoy this.

We had arranged previously to meet up with long lost friends, Wayne and Beth, through the afternoon.  They live in Kearney, about 20 minutes from the Park.

It, too, was a pretty ride to Wayne and Beth's.

We hadn't seen each other in about 8 years, so the afternoon was great fun.  So much to catch up on.  Lot's of stories to tell!

Although the weather was good the Black Flies were not, so we all sat inside.

Wayne showed us around his store,
West Algonquin Nature Store.  That was great. If you are ever in that area you should check it out.  He is such a talented man with his camera.  His pictures are excellent.  We already have several of his pictures from years ago, but right then I could have bought several more.  It truly was a great afternoon.  Thank you both Wayne and Beth - look forward to the next visit already!

Got back to camp about 6 p.m. after a fabulous afternoon and although not cold we did light the fire to deter the bugs.  It helped somewhat, but some were mighty hungry!

Spent the rest of the evening around the fire.  As dusk crept in the bugs thinned out.

Although not really too far north it was amazing to see how light it remained here.

We could hear the coyotes about 10.15 p.m. and still it was not completely dark, but decided it had been a really great day, and one filled with tons of fun, so may be time to go in for a night cap.
Wonder what tomorrow will bring.

Monday 27th May 2013
Well the fresh air certainly made us sleep well. Awoke late to another brilliant sunny day.  And yes, the bugs were already knocking at the door.

We recently treated ourselves to a new BBQ and this was it's trial run.  it worked like a charm and breakfast was cooked in no time at all.  Just as well as it appears half the morning had slipped past us.   After breakfast we planned our hike over a nice cup of tea and around noon hour we were ready to hit the trails.

Headed for Stubb's Falls Trail.

That lead directly to the falls, which was really great to see, but no good spot to do it justice with the camera.  This was the best we could do.

We then followed the river along a ravine in a loop.  It was a perfect day for this type of hiking, warm and sunny but not too hot.

The bugs liked it too, but our spray was working overtime.

Could not resist showing you this tree.
It was as if it had three legs wrapped around the original tree trunk.

The Trillium were in bloom along the trail.
Also saw a lot of Robins and Blue Jays, a couple of Woodpeckers and one lone little Red Squirrel.

It turned out to be a very interesting hike, which took about 2 hours by the time we got back to our site.

So, time to relax for a while.

Sat around chatting then took off again, this time to Big Bend Lookout.

We thought the Stubbs Falls trail was interesting but Big Bed won hands down.

The trail was well laid out and easy to hike.

When we reached the Look Out it was .........

WOW.
It showed you inside of a glacial delta.  The horizontal bands of sand going around the glacier were made by the river 12,000 years ago, and exactly where we stood . 12,000 years ago was completely covered with the water.  Now the water is 200 feet below us (or at least that is what is said, we did not check that out personally!)

It was incredible to see and at the same time fascinating to see.

However, almost 3.30 p.m. now and we still have not had lunch, so time to head back again for munchies.

Our site was good for the sunshine, although you could also get shade, so we relaxed for a while after munches, then just wandered around the road we camped on, where we found another small trail to follow.  Which took us  back to the main road way that led into our site.

Back for Happy Hour and a late Dinner.

The campfire was great, although a bit later than usual.  Turned out to be a very comfortable time of day as the bugs had all retired
Once again a very enjoyable day  It is really good to explore different places when you get the opportunity to do so.

Tuesday 28th May 2013
Lazy, hazy morning, not cold and the sun trying it's best to peak through the low cloud.
We BBQ'd breakfast but really did not want to share with the bugs or eat too much protein, so ate inside.  The forecast was for rain this afternoon, so have to hit the trails early today - well earlier that yesterday that is.
The plan was to walk the Hemlock Trail to the Lake Trail then across the park to camp.

Well half hour into the Hemlock trail it completely disappeared, we could not tell which way it went.  It was a dense wooded area running along a high rocky cliff, excellent home for the BEARS!  Our intuition  told us the best thing we should do was to turn around and get back on the Stubbs Fall trail, which also took us to Arrowhead Lake.

We did that and wandered the trail along the lake for sometime.  Very pretty, quiet and relaxing.

                                                                 Arrowhead Lake

Apparently we were back late for lunch according to our friendly squirrel who was busy hunting for his own lunch.

Later in the afternoon we walked around the campsites we had not seen and made notes of the ones we liked ready for our return visit.

From there we went to Big Bend Lookout again, and on this trial to the Lookout we found a tree the Woodpecker's really liked.

It was very windy at the Look Out today so small sand storms were erupting along the steep sides of the glacier.  Once again fascinating to see.

OK, time to head back.  Still have forecast for rain, but this evening now.  So we lucked out.

Enjoyed a relaxing time around the fire, a little earlier than normal, and also BBQ'd a bit earlier.  The weather held out nicely.  The BBQ was almost finished when the wind picked up about 7.45 p.m.     Sat in with dinner tonight and the rain started about 8.15 p.m.

We declared it "movie night"  First one in a long time when camping.  Watched an old John Wayne Movie  - "The Falling of The Alamo"  Really enjoyed that, as you may recall we were at the Alamo for the re-enactment of the Falling of The Alamo in 2011.

This has been another really good day.

Wednesday 29th May 2013.                                               312916
Heavy rain and storms through the night, but not really too bad for us to pack up, just very hot, humid and "steamy".

All packed up and ready to get going by 11.00 am.

Still misty, hot and very damp.

Toured around Huntsville after leaving the Park but the rain was far too heavy to get out and enjoy the town, so we will have to return to walk around.

From there we tried the same thing in Gravenhurst, but had the same bad luck.  It was extremely hot in Gravenhurst and the rain was even heavier.

So onto our next destination.

At  Stayner we took the "Roller Coaster Road" into Creemore where the sun had taken over from the rain.

Had a really nice picnic lunch in the park, then wandered around the town.  That was very interesting too.

Yes, we really do have to get back to Durham so left Creemore about 2.30 pm and took a scenic drive all the way back.

This has been a fun break and looking forward to the next one - where will that be ????
Check back in a while and you will be the first to know after us.  Catch you then.
