Yes it is another hot one today. Today we are on our way to Ferris Provincial Park, near Peterborough.
It was a good drive and a lot of it was along the Trans Canada Highway, 7 East.
We have been to Ferris once before, but we had forgotten most of the sites here were in complete sunshine with very little shade. With the humidity, the temperature today will feel more like 42 c. That is a lot of heat!
Arrived about 2.15 p.m., took site # 71, which was a very large site, probably the largest site we have ever had, and luckily enough there was some shade there for us. We think you could probably get about 3 large trailers on this site, with their awnings out, it is so spacious. 158180
After taking our time setting up and enjoying a late lunch, we spent the afternoon following the shade around the campsite.
Due to the extreme heat and very dry weather for the last month there was a complete fire ban in this county, and many other counties. Not that we would lit the camp fire tonight anyway. It was far too hot for that.
Dinner, like lunch, was late to day, which was just fine, as the sun was setting, and taking some of the heat away with it.
We managed to listen to some of the Blue Jays Game. They were playing Tampa Bay. We lost reception of it in the 6th innings, and Blue Jays were winning 6-0. Hopefully they can hold that win.
As we couldn't listen to the game we decided to have a game of Dominoes. It was really quite comfortable sitting at the picnic table. The slight breeze was a big help to keep us cool. You will never guess who won - and you do have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. Mike took 2 out of 3. I may have to try harder tomorrow. But I guess it was about time he won!
It had been a good day, really nice drive and another very lazy, warm evening.
Thursday 11th August 2016.
Here we go again with record "extreme heat warnings". Guess it's walking early or late today.
The temperature this morning was good. It was 22 c without any humidity. It was very comfortable in El Campista through the night too. The ceiling fan did a great job. Actually, about 4.30 a.m. we shut the fan off, as it was quite cool.
After breakfast we headed out going towards The River Gorge Trail.
On our way to the trail we had go past The Osprey Nesting Box. Unfortunately there was no sign of Osprey or other feathered friends today.
We did go past the Stone Wall reconstruction. The Stone Wall was first built to help keep the sheep in the property when it was all farmland in 1800's.
Now the wall is looking as good as new in many areas. Although there is still a lot of wall area to rebuild.
From the Stone Wall we were led towards the Trent River Water Way, which looked very picturesque.
Along the trail we could tell how extremely dry the area here had become.
Then, in the far distance we caught our first glimpse of the Suspension Bridge over the Waterway.
Yes, we are going to attempt The Bridge, yet again.
The scenery from the bridge was just as good, or may be even better, than the last trip.
Ranee Falls was not as boisterous this time around. Probably due to the lack of rain recently.
After the first 4 or 5 steps on the bridge it really isn't too bad. As long as you don't look down. That is not quite so good, with the Trent River 100 feet below you, and you can actually see it through the mess walkway.
Once over the other side we made our way to the locks - yes this is another picture of 100 feet below us. Did not know how this picture would turn out, as I didn't look down to take it!
Part of the Lock System.
The Locks and the park around the locks were really pretty.
And so once again, it was time to cross the bridge back into Ferris Park.
Then a slow walk back to our site as it was getting really hot right now.
It was a very welcome sight when we saw El Campista a few feet before us.
Time to cool down for a while before lunch.
It was another afternoon of chasing what little shade and breeze we had, but it worked out fine. We do enjoy the relaxation when camping, but we really enjoy the nice long walks. Too bad it is just a little too warm to walk far today. This mornings walk was about 2 hours, but this afternoon's temperature of 41 c made it a little on the steamy side for a nice long walk.
So our last afternoon and evening here was spent around the site. It was still good, reading, writing (no arithmetic) lots of chatting and stories.
Dominoes at the picnic table in the evening, was a success for me this time. Championship game to be played next trip.
Friday 12th August 2016
Still very hot. The forecast was for storms over night. That didn't happen. Slightly overcast about 8 a.m. but sun back by 9 a.m.
Managed to pack up easily regardless of the heat, and back on the road about 11 a.m.
We did stop at The Lift Locks in Peterborough. We had hoped to take a scenic trip through the locks, but we were right between trip times. Hopefully we can do that next trip.
From there we just started on our way home to Durham. It was a great drive, and we managed to find a great place for lunch in Mount Albert - The Prince Albert. A very nice English style Pub with excellent food and bevvy's and the people were super friendly and fun. Well worth the stop. And hopefully we can find it some other time in the near future.
After our leisurely lunch we wondered on home.
This has been a real fun trip regardless of the excessive heat. We managed to stay cool.
